chapter1101
Mandy's eyes darted straight to Rosie. Alfie was about to speak up and take the blame, so Rosie wouldn't be misunderstood or go through any trouble. But before he could say anything, Rosie stepped forward.
"Mom, I don't like Alfie. I don't want to get engaged to him. He keeps following me around. I just wanted somewhere quiet to tell him to leave me alone for good."
The entire garden seemed to freeze. Everyone who knew the situation had heard about Alfie and Rosie's supposed engagement. For Rosie to say something like that, right in front of everyone, was a huge blow to the Goss family's reputation.
As soon as the words left Rosie's mouth, Alfie's mom, Tara, looked like she could explode. To be honest, Tara had never really liked the idea of Rosie as her daughter-in-law. Rosie didn't bring much to the table herself; she only had Jackson backing her up. If not for the Hydes family, Tara never would have stopped her son from going after Rosie.
Mandy couldn't believe how reckless Rosie was being, blurting this out in front of so many people, even Alfie's mom. She was practically making enemies for the Gibson family.
"Rosie, what are you talking about? Are you and Alfie just having a little fight? You're just upset, right?" Mandy tried to smooth things over.
Nathaniel let out a sarcastic sigh. "Women are impossible. Just now she was all sweet with Alfie, and now she's pretending she never liked him. Guess she's worried about her reputation. Poor Alfie, wasting his feelings on her."
Nathaniel! What is your problem? I don't like him, okay? Why would I be all sweet with him? I'd rather stay single forever than marry him!"
Rosie was so angry she could barely talk. She yelled, then covered her mouth and ran out of the room.
Mandy shot Nathaniel a furious look before hurrying after Rosie.
Alfie could only stare at Rosie's disappearing silhouette, his heart twisting painfully. He would have stood up for her even if she hadn't said a word. He just never realized she really couldn't stand him.
Tara was furious. She marched over and grabbed Alfie by the arm. "Alfie, if it wasn't for your father, hever would have let you be with Rosie. Now this settles it. From now on, you are not to see her again."
She turned to Mabel with an apologetic, awkward smile. Mrs. Robinson, I'm so sorry for all the trouble. I'll take him home and make sure he thinks about what he's done."
Lucinda watched Rosie leave, deep in thought. She hated Caspian too. She didn't want to be with him either. In that moment, she actually envied Rosie for being able to speak up so boldly if it weren't for Lydia, Lucinda never would have put up with all this.
Kylie waited until Tara had taken Alfie away, then turned to Lydia. "Lydia, what really happened just now?"
Mabel looked at Lydia too. Yes, Lydia. I don't believe a word that boy says."
Nathaniel threw up his hands. "Mom, Lydia and I were just talking about the civil service interviews, and then those two showed up. They started saying their families were going to team up against the Robinsons and the Jeffersons. I got annoyed and wanted to teach them a lesson. What's so wrong with that?"
A well-dressed woman who had been quiet all this time finally spoke. "After what happened tonight, I doubt the marriage between the Gibson and Goss families will happen now."
