chapter198
"Okay."
Luke's situation was honestly terrible. Two months ago, they'd already removed one of his damaged kidneys. The one he had left was barely hanging on, just enough to keep him alive, but all his test results said the same thing. If he didn't get surgery soon, he wouldn't last three days.
They walked together to the ICU, stopping outside the thick glass wall. Inside, Luke lay in bed, his body battered and bruised, hooked up to so many machines. His face was so pale. He barely looked alive.
Lydia didn't have any special feelings about Luke. She didn't like him, but she didn't hate him either.
Still, Jenson and Milana adored Luke. He was everything to them, the way they were never anything to her.
But that didn't matter now. Today, whether it was Luke or someone else, if there was a matching kidney, she wasn't about to stand by and do nothing.
"Call his family. The minute the donor agrees, let the hospital know right away. We have to be ready for surgery at any time. Seriously, he can't wait another day."
"I'll handle it," Dr. Hady replied.
"Thanks."
After she left Dr. Hady, Lydia headed off to find Cameron and Kylie. Before she could get far, her phone started ringing again. It was Connor.
She stepped over to the window and answered.
On the other end, Connor sounded just a little put out. Still busy? Haven't had a second for me, huh?"
Connor felt like he was addicted to her. He was supposed to be working, but his mind kept drifting to Lydia's face.
Was he in too deep?
Lydia gave a small smile. "I am busy. Aren't you?"
If she had to guess, he was probably even busier than she was.
"Of course I'm busy. Busy thinking about you."
That came out of nowhere. Lydia was caught off guard for a second. She paused before she said, "You should focus on work."
Connor just sighed. "What time do you get off? Grandpa keeps saying his chest feels tight these days. He wants you to come check on him, if you have time."
The truth was, Connor wanted to bring Lydia home for dinner.
It was actually his grandpa's idea. The old man kept saying if Connor didn't bring
Lydia home soon, he'd just have Chris do it for him instead. As if!
Connor knew he really should've visited her family first, but Mr. Norwood was still in the hospital, and Cameron and Kyle were always there. He figured he'd wait until M Norwood was back home,
Lydia thought about it. She wasn't sure if Grandpa Samuel was really unwell or just taking it but now that Connor brought it up, she couldn' pretend she didn't know.
"I can't promise anything yet. If nothing urgent comes up tonight, I'll stop by and check on Grandpa Samuel."
They still hadn't set the time for Luke's surgery. As soon as Sandy agreed, they'd be ready to go.
Luke's situation was that serious. If he didn't get surgery within three days, not even a miracle would help.
Connor didn't expect Lydia to actually agree. Apparently, his grandpa knew her well. All it took was pretending to be sick. She really was so kind, always willing to help.
"I'll pick you up tonight then."
"No need. I'm not sure when I'll finish. Just send me the address, and if I'm coming, I'll let you know ahead of time."
Connor hesitated. "Alright."
"Okay."
"Oh, by the way, I saw the video you posted last night. It was packed with good stuff. Everyone loves it. It's already got more than a million and a half likes.
Connor sounded genuinely proud.
Lydia blinked, finally remembering.
Last night, when she got back to Lakeview Town, she'd filmed a quick video while she was making medicine. She only remembered because Sue kept messaging her nonstop. Today had been so hectic, she hadn't even checked on it.
"It was just something I made really quick."
"So, when's your next livestream?"
Connor wanted to see her on stream. He wanted to hear her voice, send her gifts,
and make it official online that they were a couple.
