chapter583
"A fall on flat ground can be serious for someone her age. But down the stairs? That's a whole other story."
Everything just fits together a little too perfectly," Connor said.
He had already questioned the two bodyguards on duty that night. Neither of them heard anything strange when Mrs. Smith fell. Maybe it was just the thunderstorm outside, drowning out any other sound.
Lydia had checked the security footage herself. It all played out the way Sandy had described. Mrs. Smith felt sorry for her and called her upstairs. Sandy went up, looking happy. Then, right after she climbed the stairs, the power went out. A few minutes later, Mrs. Smith tumbled down.
Whatever happened in those dark minutes, only Mrs. Smith and Sandy really knew.
Lydia and Connor made their way back to the Capital. When they arrived, Milana and Jenson were already at the hospital, trying to see Mrs. Smith, but the security guards wouldn't let them in.
As soon as Lydia walked in, Milana glared at her, voice full of outrage. "Lydia, what's your problem? We're her son and daughter-in-law. Who gave you the right to keep us out?"
There was a wild, tired look in Lydia's eyes. She looked like she hadn't slept all night, her anger simmering just beneath the surface. "Where were you yesterday?"
Her voice was cold. "You just show up now?"
Jenson's face fell. He couldn't meet her eyes.
Milana scoffed. "Lydia, you've practically ruined the company. We've been running around every day, trying to find investors. In our free time, we're stuck taking care of Lake We only got the news late last night. We came as soon as we could this morning. But your watchdogs wouldn't even let us in."
"If you couldn't bother to show up last night, then don't bother coming at all. Leave," Lydia said flatly.
She remembered how, after everything happened, Sandy had called them. And what did they do? Nothing.
While Grandma was fighting for her life in surgery, her own family was sound asleep at home. If they hadn't known, maybe she could forgive them. But they did know. Lydia just couldn't understand how they could go to bed, knowing what happened, and still not come.
Visit? Yeah, right. They didn't care about Grandma. They cared about her money.
Lydia, you are so ungrateful! Who are you to keep us from seeing her? We're her family! Milana was nearly shouting. It was like she and Lydia were destined to be enemies.
Lydia looked at them, her expression full of scorn. Ungrateful? Are you talking about yourselves? Jenson, Grandma raised you. She taught you everything, trusted you with the company, supported you over and over. And how did your repay her? When you need her, you act like the perfect son. When you don't, you ignore her calls. You don't care about her, you neglect her, you even hurt her. Now, when her life is on the line, you can't even come to the hospital? You're not just useless. You're a burden."
Jenson's face turned red. He glared at Lydia, voice shaking. "Lydia, don't go too far I'm still your adoptive father. We didn't know how bad it was yesterday Besides, you wer there, weren't you? You're Miracle Hands' apprentice. With you around, what could go wrong?"
Milana jumped in. "Exactly. Aren't you supposed to be some amazing doctor? She
just fell. It's not the end of the world. Patch her up and stop acting like she's dying or something."
