chapter728
Dennis felt his heart skip a beat. Every muscle in his body went tight. Then, a cold laugh rang out behind him. "Oh really?"
Dennis and the rest of his team froze in shock.
"Commander, that's not what I meant." His voice came out shaky as he spun around. Connor stood not far away, his presence so cold it felt like the air itself might freeze. The title God of War wasn't just for show. Connor's power was almost overwhelming.
"Then what did you mean? Are you saying my reputation is all talk?" Connor's eyes narrowed as he walked closer.
Dennis scrambled to explain. No, sir, I would never say that."
Connor reached out and adjusted Dennis's cap, which was slightly off to one side. His voice was low, with a hint of warning. Your hat's crooked."
A line of sweat slid down Dennis's temple. With Connor right in front of him, it felt like he was being crushed by a mountain. He barely dared to breathe.
"Thank you, Commander."
"Don't thank me yet. Take a look at this first."
Connor handed over a tablet and played a surveillance video showing Daisy's group cheating. The longer Dennis watched, the more sweat gathered on his forehead.
"So the real cheaters accuse the people who actually got the skills, and you don't even check before handing out punishment. Dennis, is that how you operate?"
Dennis panicked. Sir, I had an urgent task yesterday. I honestly didn't know about any of this."
He'd heard some rumors, but he hadn't wanted to dig deeper. All he wanted was for Rosie's group to win first place so he could look good to his bosses.
Connor nodded, then gestured for someone to bring over a voice recorder. He pressed play.
"Miss Gibson, here are all the challenge details for Capital Med School's field training. You'll find the rules and everything you need to know. This should help you get first place."
"Thank you, Uncle Dennis. I'll do my best to win."
"Good. If you need to, you can take some supplements to boost your strength. That way, nothing will go wrong."
"Okay. I won't let you down."
As the recording played, Dennis's face went pale. He looked like he'd seen a ghost. "How did you get that..."
His mind spun. He knew his days in the military were probably over.
"You're the head of a unit, but you abused your power and twisted the facts. You've broken military rules. Report yourself for investigation. someone else will be taking
here."
Connor's face was unreadable. His voice was icy.
Dennis stood there, gray-faced, sweat cooling on his skin even though the sun was blazing overhead.
"The commander keeps stepping in for them. Are you sure you're not playing favorites too?" Dennis finally snapped. He was Jackson's man with a decent rank. Connor might have returned, but after threeyears away, he didn't really have any authority. Now that things had come to this, Dennis figured he had
nothing left to lose.
Connor's eyes were like ice. "Got any proof?"
Dennis didn't have evidence, but he couldn't shake the feeling that Connor wouldn't
go this far just for one group.
"They breezed through every challenge. Isn't that suspicious enough?"
In Dennis's mind, Rosie's group had reached the finish line in three days only because she'd gotten advance access to the maps and challenge lists. And now Lydia had
outperformed Rosie. There was no way
Lydia's Group hadn't cheated
He just couldn't accept it
"If you don't believe me, take it up with Jackson. We have all the surveillance
footage to back up their results. Check it as much as you want.
When Jackson got the news about what Connor was doing at the camp, he was so angry he knocked his mug off the desk, shattering it on the floor.
