Chapter 192

chapter192

Suzanne felt a pang of sympathy as she looked at Nathan. He must have pushed himself to the limit to return at such an hour.

“It’s alright,” she said softly, shifting to the edge of the bed to make space for him. “The duties you handle are vital, but you need your strength. It’s almost dawn; please, try to rest.”

Nathan hesitated, mindful of his rugged state after the journey. “I should shower first,” he murmured.

Suzanne caught his wrist, her touch light but firm. “You’re fine. Just sleep for now; the morning is only a few hours away.”

To his own surprise, Nathan found himself obeying. As she pulled the covers over him, he felt a strange, quiet wonder at her sudden change in demeanor. Not long ago, she had been distant, her heart set on a divorce. Now, she was the picture of a caring, devoted wife. He realized then that he might never truly fathom the depths of her heart, but he was grateful for the warmth she was offering.

He lay on his side, watching her face in the soft moonlight. Her breathing was a gentle rhythm, and the faint, clean scent she carried seemed to wash away his exhaustion, leaving him with a racing heart and a peaceful mind.

The next morning, Nathan woke after a few hours of restless sleep, feeling a peculiar weight against his side. As his eyes adjusted to the light, he realized that Suzanne had moved in her sleep, her head resting near his shoulder and her arm draped across him with unconscious trust.

The proximity sent a surge of warmth through him. In the quiet of the morning, the intimacy felt profound—not just physical, but an emotional anchoring that tested his resolve to stay still. Her quiet presence was more alluring than any calculated gesture could ever be.

“Suzy,” he murmured, his voice husky from sleep.

Suzanne shifted, humming softly in her sleep, but instead of moving away, she drew closer. The innocent closeness was a challenge to Nathan’s legendary self-control. His heart hammered against his ribs as he stared at the ceiling, trying to focus on anything other than the woman beside him.

Eventually, the tension reached a peak. As Suzanne began to wake, she found Nathan looking down at her, his gaze intense and filled with an unspoken depth.

Her breath hitched as she realized their proximity. “W–What is it, Nathan?” she asked, her voice small and wavering.

Nathan took a slow, steadying breath, his hands gripping the sheets as he pulled back just enough to give her space. “Your sleeping position was... adventurous,” he rasped out, a hint of a strained smile touching his lips. “You were holding on quite tight.”

Suzanne felt a flush of embarrassment heat her cheeks. “I’m so sorry. I didn’t realize... I didn’t mean to be a nuisance.”

Nathan ran a hand through his hair, the lingering tension visible in the set of his shoulders as he stood up. “It’s fine. I’m going to start the day.”

He headed toward the bathroom with a sense of urgency, leaving Suzanne frozen in place, staring at the ceiling with a whirlwind of thoughts. She could still feel the lingering intensity of his gaze—a look that felt less like an obligation and more like a genuine, powerful attraction.

She listened to the sound of the shower, wondering if this connection was beginning to transcend the boundaries they had both set for themselves. Even without words, the air between them had shifted from cold duty to something much more complex.
