chapter1264
Mr. Norwood looked even more pleased with himself, like he was enjoying every second of Lydia's trouble. "So, what do we do now?" he asked, not even trying to hide his amusement.
Lydia didn't bother answering. She just got up from the sofa, exhaustion written all over her face. "I'm tired. I want to go to my room and rest."
Kylie quickly wiped away her tears and hurried to help her. "Of course, Lydia. Let me walk you upstairs."
Before they could leave, Connor spoke up. "Mr. Norwood, Mrs. Norwood, I'm really worried about Lydia. I'd like to stay with her for a couple of days to take care of her, if that's alright."
Cameron glanced at Connor and thought he was the kind of man any parent would be grateful for. "If you're not busy, we'd appreciate that," he said.
Mr. Norwood watched as everyone carefully surrounded Lydia and led her upstairs. He stayed silent, his eyes catching a strange, thoughtful glimmer.
Meanwhile, Lucinda was supposed to be listening to her professor in class, but her mind was drifting miles away. Lydia was making headlines again, stealing all the attention with her success abroad. The school forums were full of her name and her latest achievements, and just seeing it all made Lucinda's blood boil.
To make matters worse, she kept feeling like someone had been following her lately. It freaked her out so much, she hadn't even dared to pick up that thing she'd been planning to get. The whole situation was just too much.
Right then, her phone buzzed. She glanced down and saw it was a message from her grandpa. She figured he'd be asking when she'd come home. But when she opened the message, she had to blink a few times, convinced she'd read it wrong. She closed it, reopened it, and read it again, just to make sure.
[Grandpa]: Lucinda, your sister's back from overseas, but her eyes are injured. She can't see anything.
Her heart skipped a beat. Lucinda almost shot out of her chair. Did she read that right? She checked again, just to be sure. Was she dreaming? Was Lydia really blind? Was this actually happening?
For a few seconds, Lucinda could barely hold back the laughter bubbling up inside her. She pressed her lips together, forcing herself to look calm, and typed out a message, pretending to be surprised and worried.
[What? Lydia's eyes are hurt? Grandpa, you mean she really can't see anything at all?]
Her grandfather replied almost instantly.
[That's right. She can't see anything, and she can't heal herself either.]
Lucinda put her phone down and clasped her hands over her mouth, trying not to
burst out laughing. Finally, things were going her way. This was amazing. Absolutely perfect.
Lydia was blind. She wouldn't be able to design anymore, or perform surgeries, or even paint. She was finished. She was nothing now. Lucinda couldn't help but feel like the universe was finally on her side.
There was no way the Jefferson family would let a blind woman become Connor's wife. Connor
would see Lydia was useless annet
get rid of her soon enough. Then, who would be the one to many. Connor with all the glory Lucinda could already see it. She could barely wait to get home and see Lydia's helpless face for herself.
But it was only Thursday. She'd have to wait until Friday to go home. That was the only thing that annoyed her.
That night, Lydia stayed in her room for dinner. Connor came up to help, offering to feed her, but she shook her head gently.
I need to learn to do this myself. If I can't even manage to feed myself, then I really would be useless."
"Don't ever say that," Connor said
softly. He took her hand, pressed a
kiss to her fingertips, and looked at
her like she was the only person in the world. "To me, you'll always be the best. No one could ever take your place. Right now, all you need to do is rest."
Lydia arched an eyebrow. "Is that so? What if..... I never get my sight back?"
